Make a doll and cloth yourself with a technique unique to Hakata!


This is a plan for you to discover the craftwork technique of Hakata and use it yourself!
You will learn about “Hakata-ori”: a beautiful and firm cloth made in Hakata, and “Hakata Ningyo”: a doll with various color, shape, and face made in Hakata.
First, you will visit a traditional Japanese house where a craftsman makes Hakata-ori cloth with a weaving machine. You may make one yourself if you are lucky!
There is a shop in a local shopping street that deals with Hakata Ningyo and Kimon made from Hakata-ori, which would be a perfect place to buy your souvenir!
There is also a place where you are going to paint on a Hakata Ningyo!

・Meet the masterpiece of Hakata-ori and Hakata Ningyo! You will learn about history and culture and can buy one if you want! There is also a Hakata-ori set that makes you able to make a Hakata-ori cloth yourself!

・Experience Hakata Gion Yamakasa: the traditional festival in Hakata! The 15 meters-high wooden festival car is breathtaking! You can also watch the festival in a VR movie!

・Hakata Dentou Kougeikan: You will first learn about Hakata-ori and Hakata Ningyo here. They exhibit craftworks and you can learn about the history of them! At the shop next to this facility, you can buy small craftworks and a set that makes you able to make a Hakata-ori yourself!
・Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan: A exhibition facility using a traditional Japanese house. You can observe how craftsmen actually work and ask them questions! Your guide will translate your question!
・Kushida Shrine: A shrine with a long history. It is the starting point of the “Hakata Gion Yamakasa”: the traditional festival in Hakata and the wooden festival car used in the festival is displayed here! Make sure to take a close look at the gorgeous festival car with dolls and ornaments made by craftsmen!
・Kawabata Shopping Street: An energetic shopping street full of locals! There are shops that deals with traditional craftworks so let’s stop by! Take a rest with the locals!
・Shogetsudo: A traditional shop dealing with “Hakata Ningyo”, a doll made in Hakata. You can paint a Hakata Ningyo here! How the Hakata Ningyo would look like is all up to you!

Notes

・The tour begins and ends in different locations. If you would like to change the location of where the tour ends, please consult with your tour guide.
・We have not included any particular lunch/dinner places in this tour, but you are welcome to stop for a break and eat at resting spots.
・Please note that the cost of Hakata Ningyo painting experience (JPY2,160/person) is not included in the tour fee.
・On Wednesdays "Hakata Dentou Kougeikan" is closed. If any of the scheduled places are closed on the day you visit, your tour guide will take you to an alternative location.
